Depending on the size and age of your home, here are some examples of energy savings per year:

Attic Insulation FAQ’s

How much does it cost to insulate an attic?

Insulating your attic may cost you anywhere between $1,500 to about $3,500, and that’s a broad range. Nationally, the average sits in at around $2,000-$2,500. Costs vary based on:
- Square footage of your attic space
- The contractor’s installation fee
- Material of insulation
- Type of insulation
A bigger thing to note is the costs you’ll lose out on if you don’t insulate your attic. Energy costs have been skyrocketing recently, and there’s no real end in sight. The cost of natural gas for heating in the wintertime, especially in climates like Calgary, have practically tripled from 2000 to 2016, and now there’s Carbon Tax. The cost of AC is climbing as well. The number one source of heating – both loss and gain – is your ceiling. Upgrading your attic insulation is inexpensive and reduces your energy costs, which in a few years will pay off immensely.

What’s the benefit of an energy efficient home?

Your attic insulation is imperative to your home. Insulation can protect you and your family from significant Calgary temperature swings in an outdoor environment by helping to keep your indoor temperatures at a consistent level. If you overlook the importance of an energy efficient home, you could end up spending more money in heating your home or commercial office or cooling it down.

What’s the best insulation material for an attic?

That all depends. There’s a few options you can select from for your attic insulation materials. Fiberglass, cellulose, cotton, and mineral wool are three of the most common insulation materials. Fiberglass is the most common due to its inexpensive cost, but the fibers are known to irritate skin and lungs (although this has improved with better manufacturing) but it can also be less effective at blocking airflow. Cellulose won’t irritate your lungs, but it’s only made by a few manufacturers. Cotton is expensive, but it’s great at blocking sound transmission and airflow, and finally mineral wool is about run-of-the-mill when it comes to cost and is naturally fire-resistant.

What type of insulation should I choose?

You’ll choose between batt and loose fill when it comes to insulation types. Batt, or blanket insulation, is the most flexible insulation material and comes in various thicknesses. It’s best for attics with few obstructions, sufficient headroom, and standard joist spacing. A loose fill is best for attics with abnormal or nonstandard joist positioning, low-clearance attics that have limited headroom, or attics that have lots of obstructions and penetrations to work around. Insulation fibers for loose fill are packaged in bags and essentially “blown” into place for the desired density and depth.
